Remembering
the Great Depression
laine Paden first realized the affects of the Great Depression during high school. For her junior year, she was able to get a new dress for a school banquet. But between those years, the bank where her father’s money failed, and she wore the same dress for her senior year.
All of Paden’s brothers and sisters were able to go to college, but by the time she was ready, there was no money left. Her older sister insisted she went, and paid for her school.
“Nothing was said, it was very strange. I knew that the bank had failed and they talked about it, but nothing was really said. I think they thought I was too young to know about these unpleasant things, so they spared me.”
“We didn’t talk about it a lot, and radio is all we had then. It never really impinged on my life except to say you have to think what you buy and don’t buy what you don’t need, so, get by.”
