The St. Jude Catholic Worker House
The St. Jude Catholic Worker House, located at 317 S. Randolph St. in Champaign, operates a soup kitchen for anyone who is hungry. The soup kitchen is open from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every day, providing people with a hot meal and also a sack meal for supper if needed.
The hospitality of St. Jude’s is not unique; in fact, there more than one hundred Catholic Worker Houses in the United States. They are all part of the Catholic Worker movement which was started by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin in New York in 1933. The purpose of the movement is to help promote social justice and racial equality for those on the margin of society. This has been done largely, by opening houses of hospitality across the country that provide food, shelter and compassion to anyone who needs it. These houses are run by many volunteers, including live-in volunteers who make commitments to live with the poor.
The St. Jude Catholic Worker House thrives with the help of volunteers. If you’d like to help out with the soup kitchen, cooking, food storage, cleaning, or by donating your time in some other way, they ask that you call and either speak to a volunteer or leave a message. St. Jude’s also accepts monetary donations. For more information, see their donation page.
